We got our chicks today!
I ordered 10 Rhode Island Red hens, 14 Buff Orpington hens and 2 Buff
Orpington roosters.  They added 1 Rare
Breed chick and a Buff Orp rooster to my order.  That’s what the packing list said.  I received 25 Rhode Island Reds, 16 Buff Orps and 1 Rare
Breed.  They sent me 11 extra
chicks!  Hooray!style="mso-spacerun: yes">  I chose the Rare Breed chick to gauge their
growth on a daily basis.  I’ve been
waiting for them since April.  The
hatchery said they’ve never had so many first time chicken buyers.style="mso-spacerun: yes">  Does that tell you something?style="mso-spacerun: yes">  Either people are afraid of the diseases
that are popping up in store bought chickens or they think the economy’s going
to crash and they need to start growing their own food.style="mso-spacerun: yes">  We grow our chicks for a combination of
these reasons.  We know what they are
eating; therefore, we know what we are eating!
I’m going to keep about 15 for laying hens, 10 for breeding stock and we’ll
eat the rest.  We should be able to
manage our flock to provide new chicks enough to keep the freezer full and
never run out of the delicious eggs!  My
Rare Breed chick is exempt from freezer duty whether it’s a rooster or
not.  I’m handling it a lot so it will
be tame.  We eat all mean roosters
around here.  No floggings allowed at my
house!
