Work in Progress

WORK IN PROGRESS

I’m making a Daisy afghan.
You crochet 9 rows of 12 daisies and then crochet them together and
crochet lace around the outside.

have my own flowers to cut and put around the house.

Bo finished the fence around the front yard.style="mso-spacerun: yes">  Now he needs to weld a gate and fill a few
gaps and we well have encapsulated the yard.
We just need to move some scrap piles and I can plant my flowers and
we’ll plant grass.  Boy, will it be nice
to have grass, then I won’t have so much dust and dirt in the house.

We need to finish clearing out the garden and then we can
plant.  We still have to decide where to
put the corn patch.

Icon Art

Ben’s
Icon Art

Icon Art has very strict,
formal rules. Artists used to pray and
fast before painting Icon Art. Good
Icon Art would cause a spiritual experience for the viewer back in its day (900
A.D. – 1400 A.D.) The figures were
supposed to look otherworldly, be flat & two-dimensional; eyes are dark
& shaded; noses long and slender.
Brows are arched; faces are heart-shaped with tiny, well-shaped mouths
and long slender hands & fingers.
They used a lot of gold leaf and jewel-encrusted frames. Icon Art was found in Eastern churches in
place of statues.

Battle of the Books

2008
Battle of the Books

Benjaman
competed in the Battle of the Books at Onate High School in Las Cruces this
past weekend. He had to read at least
10 of 20 books (he read 16). He was
placed on a team with kids from other schools and libraries. They were then asked questions about the
books and had to answer with the correct book title and author. Benjaman’s team tied 1 round and lost the
other 3, but he had a great time. He’s
already planning for next year’s Battle!

It
was nice for us to get out of town and see friends we hadn’t seen in
years. We were all surprised at how
much the kids had grown! Bo picked up a
truck from one of our friend’s to drive back and forth to work. His diesel was killing us in gas!

Our
Rhode Island Red chicken was found dead in the horse pen when we got home. She must have gotten trampled by the
horses. We buried her under the willow
tree where she liked to wallow with the other chickens.

Opening day

Oops, it's been awhile since I posted! We have such an insane schedule! We have lessons all morning then activities in the afternoon and evening. We only have 2 afternoons a week that we can stay home, but have sports every evening, either Jiu Jitsu or baseball.

Saturday was opening day for Ben's baseball league. Ben's team is all new to the majors division, but they played last year's major division champs. They only lost by 5. They played a really good game. Ben played 2 innings and made a good play, he plays left field. Ben got hit in warm-ups on the eyebrow and his head swelled up, then not too long after that he got hit in the cheek on the other side, not as hard though. He's okay and he watched the ball much better after that!

Yes, that’s snow on those
mountains.  We had a good old fashioned
New Mexico storm yesterday.  It was
cloudy and windy and depending on where you were you saw blowing sand, rain or
snow.  Sometimes you even saw a
combination.  We saw muddy droplets in
the morning.  The wind was blowing the
dirt around and then it only rained enough to moisten the dirt and blow it onto
my windshield!  It rained in the
evening.  It was so nice to get some
moisture; we haven’t had any since the end of January or beginning of
February.  We are already under fire
restrictions.

our solar system.  It is on Mars.style="mso-spacerun: yes">

Cottonless Cottonwood trees. We are so
excited to see them grow and know that we will have some shade next summer!

Russian
Sage

up 5 Russian Sage plants. That is just
enough to line the west side of the house.
I can’t wait until they come up!

Chinese
Elm Sunset

This was the sunset this
evening as I finished all the planting.

Utah. It is now over 10 feet tall!

The chickens have taken to
walking around the cars in the driveway.
I thought this would make a neat picture.

Weekly Report 3-30-08 to 4-5-08

It was a good
week all in all. Benjaman got all his school work done. That was a feat since
Spring is shaping up so nicely here. It's been in the 70s all week with only a
little wind. The great outdoors was a huge temptation this week! We took lots
of breaks!

Fence

Bo's going to Carrizozo to
get our trailer, now we can haul a ton of hay at a time (literally, 1 ton!).
It's been hard to take a weekend day to go get it since he's been working on
the fence every weekend. This is section of the pipe/wire fence along the horse
lane. The horses now have about a 500 foot stretch that's 20' wide. This is
called a Pasture Paradise. Bo went to a hoof clinic in Utah and the guy said
that healthy horse feet come from alot of walking. So...our horses will now
have to walk through a que to get to their food. You put the food on one end
and water at the other so they have no choice but to walk the cue. Not only
will it help their feet, it will keep them in better shape than just standing
at the food and water all day.

Chicken

Poor Gimpy
chicken.  She's 4 years old and one of
the chickens that my mom kept for me while we were gone.style="mso-spacerun: yes">
We call her gimpy because when she was a
chick she dislocated her hip.  Jeremy
said we needed to kill her, but I just couldn't.  We had the vet look at her when he gave the horses their shots
that year.  He said a new hip socket
might grow in so we left her alone.
Sure enough, a hip socket grew, but she still limps.style="mso-spacerun: yes">  Gimpy is famous for very long brown eggs
which are often double yolks.  Well,
she's been a bit lethargic since she got home and hasn't laid in the 3 months
we've been back.  Last week she started
sitting in the nest box for hours a day.
I thought maybe she was going broody, but usually they sit for 22 hours
a day right off the bat when they go broody.
I happened to lift her feathers to see if she had an egg stuck.style="mso-spacerun: yes">  I saw the nastiest thing, Lice!style="mso-spacerun: yes">  Well, off I go to the feed store for a
de-louse powder for the chickens.  This
stuff is so caustic that I can't get it in their eyes or let them breathe
it.  I have to wear a mask, glasses,
long sleeves just to avoid exposure to me!
There are 2 ways to de-louse a chicken.
1. put the chicken in a trash with it's head sticking out and some of
the powder and shake.  (yeah, right! Not
my chickies!) 2.  Hold the chicken
upside down by it's feet so the feathers lay open and shake the powder onto
them.  I chose option 2.style="mso-spacerun: yes">  Then I had to treat all 3 chickens even
though 2 of them didn't have any lice or lice eggs.  It's been a week since treatments and I'm happy to report that
all lice and eggs are gone.  Apparently,
lice and mites are common in chickens.
We've had them for 4 years and haven't had any; I guess we were due.style="mso-spacerun: yes">  Gimpy started laying eggs this week, but
broke it every time.  I finally got one
that was whole, but it didn't feel like the right weight so I decided to check
it.  To check if an egg is good you fill
a bowl with water and put the eggs in.
The bad ones will float right on the top.  Well, her egg was good, but I broke it taking
it out of the bowl DOH!  The shell was
thinner than the other eggs.  So
hopefully, we'll have Gimpy eggs this week as she continues to feel better and
eats her lay pellets.

My neighbor,
Peggy, and I walked 3 times this week.
We've been walking as much as our schedule and the wind allows, this was
a good week.  We walk about 2 1/4 miles
round trip.  We just added the 1/4
mile.  Belle loves the walk.style="mso-spacerun: yes">
I'm so glad I trained her on a leash when
she was young!  Bo doesn't believe in
leashes.  He teaches his dogs to stay by
his side.  But he was working so much
when we got Belle that he couldn't teach her that.  Bo's dog, JT, always stayed by his side.style="mso-spacerun: yes">  JT even stopped at intersections and checked
for traffic before crossing!

Benjaman had 4 baseball practices for a total of 7 hours
this week and only made it to 1 Jiu Jitsu class.  He also rode his bike on every walk.  He jumps on the trampoline every day.  He is not what people think of when they think
"homeschooler".  You know, the
skin is green because they spend all day inside in front of the comptuer, game
system or tv!  He is very active!style="mso-spacerun: yes">
We only made it to one park day this week
though.  Too much schoolwork to make the
2nd park day.  Baseball season opens for
him next weekend.  His team will play 2
games a week until the beginning of June.

The Best Ever Most Fabulous Chocolate Chip Cookies

These are the yummiest cookies I've ever had! I made myself sick on them last night! diet, schmiet!
Here's the recipe:
Chewy Jumbo Chocolate Chip Cookies
Land O Lakes Butter

4 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/2 cups Land O Lakes Butter, softened
1 1/4 cups sugar
1 1/4 cups firmly packed brown sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 (12-ounce) package (2 cups) real semi- sweet chocolate chunks or chocolate chips
  • Heat oven to375 degrees F. Combine flour, baking powder and baking soda in medium bowl. Set aside.
  • Combine butter, sugar and brown sugar in large bowl. Beat at medium speed, scraping bowl often, until creamy. Add eggs and vanilla. Continue beating, scraping bowl often, until well mixed. Reduce speed to low. Beat, gradually adding flour mixture until well mixed. Stir in chocolate chunks or chips.
  • Drop dough by 1/4 cupfuls, 2 inches apart, onto ungreased cookie sheets. Bake for 10 to 14 minutes or until light golden brown. (DO NOT OVERBAKE.) Let stand 1 to 2 minutes. Remove from cookie sheets.

26 jumbo cookies

TIP: For 2 1/2-inch cookies, drop dough by rounded tablespoonfuls, 2 inches apart, onto ungreased cookie sheets. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until light golden brown. 4 dozen cookies.

I used chocolate chips because that's what I had. I made them smaller cookies that way, maybe be some miracle, I could only eat one and not eat so many calories!
